What is Serve to Lead
Serve to Lead began with a simple question: how do you help future leaders practise difficult decisions before they face them for real? Developed with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the award winning serious game places Officer Cadets in authentic military scenarios where they investigate incidents, interpret policy and make leadership decisions with meaningful consequences. The result is an experience that encourages discussion, reflection and better judgement, rather than simply finding the right answer.
How we solved it
Serve to Lead is an award winning serious game developed in partnership with the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to help Officer Cadets develop leadership judgement through realistic decision making. Across three immersive scenarios, learners investigate complex situations, gather evidence, interpret Army policy and justify their decisions before reflecting with instructors and peers. Rather than testing knowledge, the experience develops confidence, critical thinking and professional judgement in a safe environment before those decisions are made in real life.
As Creative Director and Learning Experience Designer, I led the project from concept through to delivery. I developed the instructional design methodology, designed the learner journey and game mechanics, established the creative direction and user experience, and worked with subject matter experts to ensure authenticity throughout. I also introduced AI assisted production workflows to accelerate asset creation while maintaining quality, overseeing narrative design, visual identity, accessibility and iterative user testing to create an experience that was both educationally robust and engaging.
Serve to Lead was embedded within the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst curriculum and successfully piloted with Officer Cadets in a live training environment. The experience demonstrated high levels of learner engagement and meaningful discussion during facilitated debriefs, where reflection on decision making became the primary learning outcome. The project received international recognition, winning the Government Audience Choice Award at the I/ITSEC Serious Games Showcase & Challenge, and has become the foundation for the wider Ethical Edge methodology, supporting the development of future behavioural simulation products across Defence and other high consequence sectors.
